How My Family Chooses a Campground Before We Book (And Why Some Parks Get Skipped)
We’re deep in planning mode for our 2026 summer trip. And that means, deep into how to choose a campground for each stop.
Six weeks on the road.
Multiple states.
A mix of national parks, family stops, and as many campground visits as we can fit in along the way.
And this year feels a little different.
Between the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Route 66 Centennial, and what feels like an unpredictable travel economy, we’re expecting more families to hit the road again. More RVs. More tents. More last-minute decisions.
Which means one thing for campground owners:
The competition for attention is going to be real.
Because as we plan our route, we’re not just looking for places to stay.
We’re making decisions quickly about where we can actually picture our family.
What We’re Balancing as a Traveling Family
Our trip is not just point A to point B.
We’re layering a lot into these six weeks:
- visiting as many Martrek Digital client parks as possible
- planning around national park stops using the Every Kid Outdoors pass (which, if you have a fourth grader, is an incredible resource)
- coordinating time with family in Colorado and Nevada
- mapping routes that actually make sense for our rig
Every decision connects to the next one.
- Can we physically get there?
- Does it align with where we’re already headed?
- Will our kids have something to do when we arrive?
- Can we work from the road when we need to?
And then comes the biggest question of all:
Can we actually book it? Let’s get into how we book a campground for each necessary stop, and how we decide to skip.
What Happens First: We Go Online
Every single decision we make starts the same way:
We search.
We click.
We look.
And within seconds, we’re deciding:
Can we see ourselves here?
That decision happens through:
- the website
- the Google Business Profile
• the photos
• the clarity of information
• and how easy it is to take the next step
Before we ever read every detail, we’re forming a first impression.
Why We Skip Parks (Even When We Want to Book)
This is the part that might be hard to hear. How we book a campground is highly dependent on what we see first, online.
We have skipped multiple parks over the last few months, not because they weren’t a fit, but because we couldn’t tell if they were.
Some of the most common reasons:
- outdated or inconsistent website content
- no clear visuals of the park experience
- unclear if it’s kid-friendly
- confusing layout or missing information
- no online booking available
If you are a Martrek regular, you know what we are talking about here. They are not using the Roasted Marshmallow Method™ and SHOWING us (and telling us) who their campground is best fit for.
And the biggest one recently:
availability not open yet
We were actively planning Colorado/Utah stops in February and March, and I cannot believe how many parks did not have summer availability open yet.
From a traveler’s perspective, that’s not a “we’ll check back later.”
That’s a:
“We need to move on and lock something in.”
Because when you’re planning a multi-week trip, you can’t wait for uncertainty to resolve.
What Makes Us Actually Book
When a park gets it right, the decision feels easy.
We can picture it.
We understand it.
We trust it.
That usually comes down to:
- clear, updated photos that show real experiences
- simple, easy-to-navigate website structure
- obvious amenities and what makes the park unique
- a booking process that feels fast and straightforward
- confidence that what we see is what we’ll get
We don’t need everything to be perfect.
We just need it to be clear.
Why This Matters More in 2026
This year is shaping up to be a big one for travel.
More road trips.
More milestone-driven travel.
More families looking for flexible, memory-driven experiences.
But that also means:
More options.
And when there are more options, decisions happen faster.
If we can’t quickly understand a park, we move on.
Not because we want to.
Because we have to.
The Connection Back to Campground Owners
This is where the traveler side and the business side meet.
Because as much as I’m writing this as a mom planning a six-week trip…
I also know exactly what’s happening behind the scenes for campground owners trying to keep up with:
- Operations
- Staffing
- Pricing
- reservation systems
- guest communication
It’s a lot.
But from the outside looking in, the decision is simple:
Can we picture our stay here, and can we book it right now?
Final Thought
We are not a unique case.
We are one of thousands of families planning trips right now, balancing time, logistics, budget, and experience.
And like most travelers, we’re making decisions quickly based on what we can see and understand in the moment.
For campground owners, that means your website, your listing, and your booking experience are not just marketing tools.
They are the moment the decision happens.
And, if you’re wondering whether your park is making it easy for families like ours to choose you, we’re always happy to take a look.
