How AI Is Changing Paid Ads for Campgrounds and RV Parks

The Future of Advertising Has Arrived—Even for Campgrounds

Ever feel like your paid ads are unpredictable? One week they’re driving bookings like crazy, and the next, you can’t figure out what went wrong. You’re not alone. The digital ad landscape is shifting faster than ever, and the reason is three simple letters: AI.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how campground and RV park owners promote their parks online. From automating ad targeting to testing thousands of creative combinations in seconds, AI is quietly doing what used to take marketing teams weeks of manual work.

But here’s the good news: AI isn’t replacing human marketers. It’s amplifying smart strategy. And when used correctly, it can help you attract the right campers, reduce wasted ad spend, and fill your sites faster.

Let’s break down how AI is changing paid ads for campgrounds and RV parks and how you can make it work for your park in 2025.

What’s Actually Changing in Paid Ads (and Why It Matters for Campgrounds)

If you’ve been running Google Ads or Facebook campaigns for a while, you’ve probably noticed the tools changing beneath your fingertips. The old way of manually picking audiences, setting strict budgets, and testing one ad at a time is giving way to AI-powered automation.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Smarter targeting: Instead of choosing interests like “family camping” or “RV travel,” AI learns from behavior. It knows when someone has been researching campgrounds, looking at local attractions, or planning a weekend getaway.
  • Dynamic creative testing: Platforms like Meta and Google now test endless ad combinations automatically, mixing images, headlines, and calls-to-action to see what drives clicks.
  • Real-time bidding: AI adjusts bids constantly, showing your ad to the right person, in the right place, at the right time without you touching a thing.

In other words, AI is making ads more efficient and more effective. But it’s also removing a layer of control, which means strategy matters more than ever.

? Think of AI as your co-pilot (see what we did there? I see you Microsoft), it can steer the ship, but you still need to set the destination.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to embrace the tools that are doing the heavy lifting: Google Performance Max and Meta Advantage+ campaigns.

For background on how manual testing used to work, check out our post Campground Marketing Strategies: How to Triage Content, Test Ads, and Tap Meta & Pinterest for More Bookings

Google Performance Max and Meta Advantage+: What Campground Owners Need to Know

Google Performance Max Campaigns

Performance Max (PMax) is Google’s AI-powered campaign type that runs ads across all of its channels: Search, Display, YouTube, Maps, and more, based on your goals. You provide the assets (photos, videos, copy) and conversion actions (like online bookings or phone calls), and Google’s algorithm figures out how to maximize your results. Martrek Digital has tested ALL of the ad formats with our clients, and by far, to date, PMax is the highest performing with the best ROI for our partners.

For campground and RV park owners, this is a game changer. PMax can:

  • Find people searching for “campgrounds near me,” “family cabins,” or “RV resorts in [state].”
  • Serve ads on YouTube travel videos, Maps searches, or even Gmail promotions.
  • Learn which ad formats drive the most conversions and automatically shift your budget toward them.

The key: Give PMax good data. If your website isn’t optimized, or your booking tracking isn’t set up correctly, AI won’t know what a successful ad looks like.

? Tip: In GA4, and Google Tag Manager (GMT) mark your key actions (calls, bookings, “Book Now” clicks) as primary conversions so Google can learn what success looks like.

Meta Advantage+ Campaigns

Meta’s Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns and Advantage+ Audience tools are doing the same for Facebook and Instagram. They use AI to automatically test combinations of images, copy, and CTAs, then allocate your budget to what performs best.

For example, if you upload five photos of your park, say, one of your cabins, one of your pool, and one of your beach, Meta’s AI will test all versions and learn which one gets families to click “Book Now.”

That means less guesswork and more time focusing on your guest experience instead of your ad dashboard.

? Pro Tip: Keep your creative library fresh. Even the smartest AI can’t make outdated or low-quality photos perform well.

Note: At the time of this article, Martrek Digital has experienced many issues with these campaigns not targeting correctly or erroneously including audiences that are not a fit. When running Meta Advantage+ campaigns in these early stages, make sure that your staff in charge (or marketing support team like Martrek Digital) has a lot of oversight on these campaigns and is watching them closely to turn off automated ads that are not a fit for your audience.

Why Human Strategy Still Matters (Even When AI Runs the Ads)

There’s a common misconception that AI will make human marketers obsolete. In reality, the opposite is true. The more automated ads become, the more valuable human insight becomes.

AI doesn’t understand your story, it understands patterns.
It doesn’t know the feeling of roasting marshmallows under the stars, or why guests come back year after year. That’s your story to tell.

At Martrek Digital, we call this the Roasted Marshmallow Theory™; every camper has their version of a perfectly roasted marshmallow. Your marketing should do the same: meet your guests exactly where they are, with the right message and emotion. And, you should only be trying to attract those that are looking for you, their perfect fit.

AI can help you reach them faster, but it’s your job to make them care once they arrive.

? Your advantage isn’t just data, it’s authenticity.

Make sure your creative assets, messaging, and website reflect the experience your guests love most about staying with you. That’s the content AI will amplify.

How to Make AI Work for You (Practical Tips for Campground Owners)

Now that you know the “why,” let’s talk about the “how.”

Here are five ways to make sure AI is helping, not hurting, your paid ad strategy:

1. Start with Clear Conversion Goals

Before launching any campaign, decide what success means.
Is it a phone call? A booking engine checkout? A lead form submission?

AI can only optimize if it knows what to aim for.
Use GA4 or Google Tag Manager to track these events, and make sure your booking button is clearly labeled and tracked.

2. Feed AI the Right Signals

AI learns from what you give it. If your ads, website, or data are confusing, your results will be too.

  • Keep your website fast and mobile-friendly (especially for campers booking from the road). Tools like Page Speed Insights which we covered extensively in our “Website Wanderlust” session of our Roasted Marshmallow Method Mastermind are perfect for testing this.
  • Use consistent branding, colors, and CTAs across all ad platforms.
  • Upload high-quality photos and videos that represent your real guest experience.

The stronger the signals, the smarter your AI campaigns become.

3. Let AI Learn Before You Judge It

This is the hardest part for many campground owners.
AI campaigns, especially Google PMax, take time to “learn.” During that phase, performance may fluctuate as it tests audience combinations and placements.

Resist the urge to tweak every day. Give it at least 2–3 weeks to stabilize before making big changes.

⏳ Patience pays off. Constantly resetting campaigns can erase all of AI’s learning progress.

Let AI handle the placement and audience, while you fine-tune what resonates most. For creative testing ideas, see HubSpot’s AI Advertising Guide.

4. Keep Testing—But With Intention

AI handles the math, but you handle the message. Test new creative ideas, offers, and storytelling angles.

Try things like:

  • Highlighting weekday stays or fall camping discounts.
  • Showcasing local attractions like nearby trails or fishing lakes.
  • Using emotion-driven language like “escape,” “unplug,” or “reconnect.”

Let AI handle the placement and audience, while you fine-tune what resonates most. For creative testing ideas, see HubSpot’s AI Advertising Guide.

5. Combine AI with Human Oversight

No matter how smart your campaigns get, they still need human supervision.
Regularly check:

  • Are your ads showing in the right regions?
  • Are clicks turning into real bookings?
  • Are your negative keywords filtering irrelevant traffic?

Use AI as your assistant, but don’t hand it the keys entirely.

We’re just scratching the surface of what AI will do for digital marketing in outdoor hospitality.

In the near future, expect to see:

  • Predictive booking windows: AI will anticipate when travelers start searching for getaways in your area and show ads accordingly.
  • Dynamic pricing: Ads that automatically adjust based on site availability, season, and weather.
  • Real-time retargeting: Personalized ads that follow guests from Instagram to Google Maps, reminding them to book their favorite site.

AI is going to make advertising more personal, not less.
But the parks that win will be the ones that pair automation with authenticity.

“AI doesn’t replace storytelling, it scales it.”

Before You Launch Your Next Campaign…

Take 10 minutes and ask yourself:

  • Do I have my conversions set up properly?
  • Are my photos and creative assets current and consistent?
  • Am I giving AI the right data to learn from?

If the answer is “not yet,” that’s okay. This is exactly what we help campground owners fix every day at Martrek Digital.

We’re campers too, so we know that marketing your park isn’t just about clicks—it’s about community, connection, and booked sites that lead to memories.
